Reflexive particle verbs (ge sig av, dra sig undan)

Setting Boundaries

Sometimes we all need a break from socializing. Whether you are naturally introverted or just need some quiet time, expressing your boundaries is an important skill.

He is introverted and enjoys being at home.
Han är inåtvänd och trivs hemma.

Reflexive Particle Verbs

To talk about retreating or seeking solitude, Swedish often relies on reflexive particle verbs.

  • A particle verb pairs a verb with a stressed particle (an adverb or preposition) to create a new meaning.
  • A reflexive verb is an action directed at yourself, requiring a reflexive pronoun (mig, dig, sig, oss, er).

When a verb is both reflexive and a particle verb, the reflexive pronoun must sit directly between the verb and the particle.

Verb + Reflexive Pronoun + Particle

I usually withdraw in the evening.
Jag brukar dra mig undan på kvällen.

Notice how mig sits perfectly between the verb (dra) and the particle (undan). This placement is mandatory across all subjects and tenses.

When she is sad, she shuts herself in.
När hon är ledsen stänger hon sig inne.

When your social battery is running low, you might need to make a swift exit.

We must leave before it gets dark.
Vi måste ge oss av innan det blir mörkt.
Get out of here!
Ge dig av härifrån!

Remember the rule: verb (ge), reflexive pronoun (oss or dig), particle (av).

He never wants to intrude.
Han vill aldrig tränga sig på.
You should stay out of the way while I cook.
Du borde hålla dig undan medan jag lagar maten.
