Questions & Answers about Vi letar efter varenda liten avvikelse i vartenda underlag.
Why does the sentence use both varenda and vartenda?
These are the en-word and ett-word forms of the intensifying determiner meaning "every single". Because avvikelse (discrepancy) is an en-word, it takes varenda. Underlag (supporting document) is an ett-word, so it takes vartenda.
Why is the adjective in its indefinite form (liten) rather than the definite form (lilla)?
While many determiners (like den or min) trigger the definite form of an adjective, varenda, vartenda, and the related word varje (every) are exceptions. They require both the adjective and the noun to remain in their indefinite singular forms. That is why we see liten avvikelse here.
What exactly does underlag mean in a professional context like this?
Underlag literally translates to "underlay" or "foundation". However, in Swedish business, administrative, or research contexts, it is the standard word for "supporting documentation", "source data", or the paperwork that an investigation or decision is based on.
Does avvikelse always translate to "discrepancy"?
It broadly means "deviation", "anomaly", or "departure" from a rule or norm, coming from the verb att avvika (to deviate). In quality control or auditing contexts like the one in this sentence, "discrepancy" or "non-conformance" is usually the best English translation.
