Questions & Answers about Du bör tvätta dig om händerna på spaet.
Why does Swedish say tvätta dig om händerna instead of just tvätta dina händer?
This is the standard Swedish way to talk about actions done to your own body. Instead of using a possessive pronoun like in English, Swedish uses a reflexive pronoun (dig), a preposition (om), and the definite form of the body part (händerna). Saying tvätta dina händer is grammatically possible but sounds unnatural and overly translated from English.
Why is the preposition om used here?
In these reflexive body-part constructions, the specific preposition you need depends entirely on the verb and the body part. For washing your hands or face, Swedish uses om (which generally means 'around' or 'about'). It is best to memorize tvätta sig om as a fixed pattern.
Why is the body part in the definite form (händerna) rather than just händer?
Because the reflexive pronoun (dig) already clearly establishes whose hands are being washed. In Swedish, once ownership of a body part or item of clothing is obvious from the context, you drop the possessive words and simply use the definite article ('the hands').
What is the base word for spaet and why does it look like that?
The base word is the neuter noun ett spa. To make it definite ('the spa'), you add the standard neuter suffix -et, resulting in spaet. Since it is an English loanword ending in a vowel, attaching the suffix creates a vowel cluster that looks slightly unusual in Swedish, but it follows perfectly regular grammar rules.
