Questions & Answers about Om jag vore tillgänglig skulle jag garantera resultatet.
Why is vore used here instead of var?
vore is the past subjunctive form of the verb vara (to be). It is used to express hypothetical or unreal conditions, matching the English 'were' in 'If I were...'. While you can also use the standard past tense var here (Om jag var tillgänglig), vore is highly idiomatic and extremely common in these hypothetical 'if' sentences.
Why does the second half of the sentence start with the verb skulle instead of the subject jag?
This is a classic example of the Swedish V2 (verb-second) rule. The entire subordinate clause (Om jag vore tillgänglig) acts as the first piece of information in the sentence. Therefore, the main clause must start immediately with the verb (skulle) to keep the verb in the second position, pushing the subject (jag) to the third position.
Could I express the conditional 'would guarantee' without using skulle?
Technically, yes. In written or formal Swedish, the past tense can sometimes express a conditional outcome on its own (Om jag vore tillgänglig, garanterade jag resultatet). However, using skulle + infinitive is by far the most natural and clear way to express 'would [verb]' in everyday Swedish.
Can tillgänglig be used for things being available, or only people?
It works for both! Just as it means a person has free time or is reachable in this sentence, it can also describe data being accessible, a public building being wheelchair-accessible, or a product being available to buy in a store.
