Questions & Answers about Vi måste förstå mekanismerna som leder till extremismen.
How can I predict the gender and plural of loanwords ending in -ism like mekanism and extremism?
Words ending in the international suffix -ism are predictably en-words. When they can be pluralized, they take the -er plural ending. That is why mekanism becomes mekanismer in the plural, and mekanismerna in the definite plural.
Why does the sentence use the definite form extremismen when the English translation just says 'extremism'?
In Swedish, abstract nouns used in a general, overarching sense typically take the definite form. While English drops the article for general concepts like 'extremism' or 'capitalism', Swedish uses the definite endings, making them extremismen and kapitalismen.
Why is there no att before förstå?
Måste is a modal verb meaning 'must' or 'have to'. In Swedish, modal verbs are followed directly by the infinitive of the main verb without using the infinitive marker att. This is exactly like how English says 'must understand' instead of 'must to understand'.
Is leder till the standard way to express 'leads to' a result?
Yes, the verb leder (leads) pairs perfectly with the preposition till (to) when describing consequences, developments, or causes, matching English word-for-word in this context.
