Questions & Answers about En felfri diamant med en perfekt slipning är ytterst dyr.
What makes ytterst an absolute superlative here, and how is it different from just saying väldigt?
The word ytterst literally comes from the superlative of yttre (outer), meaning outermost or extreme. In Swedish, absolute superlatives are used to express a very high degree without actually comparing the object to anything else. While väldigt (very) is common in everyday speech, ytterst elevates the register to sound more formal and emphasizes that the diamond is exceptionally expensive.
The word felfri means flawless. Is adding -fri a common way to make adjectives in Swedish?
Yes, the suffix -fri works exactly like the English suffix -free or -less. It literally means free from or without. Felfri means without faults (flawless). You will frequently see it in everyday words like sockerfri (sugar-free) or alkoholfri (alcohol-free).
How does the word slipning translate to cut in the context of a diamond?
The noun slipning comes from the verb slipa, which means to grind, sharpen, or polish. When talking about gems, crystals, or glass, slipning refers to the specific way the material has been shaped and polished, which is exactly what we call the cut of a diamond in English.
Both felfri and perfekt are in their basic forms here. Would they change if we were talking about multiple diamonds?
