Questions & Answers about Mannen kramade henne inte, utan stod där med blicken mot golvet.
Why is it med blicken (the gaze) instead of med sin blick (his gaze)?
In Swedish, when talking about body parts, clothing, or personal faculties (like a gaze, a voice, or a smile) that clearly belong to the subject, you use the definite form rather than a possessive pronoun. So, "his gaze" becomes blicken. This is especially common in descriptive phrases starting with med.
How does the construction med blicken mot golvet work here?
This is a descriptive "absolute" construction, which is the focus of this lesson. It combines med (with) + a noun phrase (blicken) + a direction or location (mot golvet). Together, these pieces act as an adverbial phrase that describes the physical state or posture of the subject while they are doing the main action (standing there).
Why use utan instead of men for the word "but"?
You must use utan when you are directly contradicting and replacing a negated statement. Since the first part of the sentence is negative (kramade henne inte - did not hug her), utan is used to introduce the reality of what happened instead. You can translate it mentally as "but rather".
Why does the verb stod come immediately after utan without a subject?
