Questions & Answers about Till skillnad från det fruktiga kaffet är den mörka rostningen ofta bitter.

How does till skillnad från affect the word order in this sentence?

Because the contrastive phrase Till skillnad från det fruktiga kaffet takes up the entire first position in the sentence, the verb är must come immediately after it to satisfy the Swedish V2 (verb-second) rule. That is why the subject and verb are inverted to är den mörka rostningen instead of the standard subject-first order.

Could I use i motsats till instead of till skillnad från in this sentence?

Yes, you could say I motsats till det fruktiga kaffet... and it would mean the same thing. Till skillnad från translates most directly to unlike, while i motsats till means in contrast to, which can sound slightly more formal and emphasizes a direct opposite.

Why do fruktiga and mörka end in -a, but bitter does not?

Fruktiga and mörka are attributive adjectives placed directly before a noun inside a definite phrase, so they must take the definite -a ending. However, bitter is a predicative adjective describing the subject after the verb är. Predicative adjectives only agree with gender and number, and since rostningen is a singular en-word, bitter stays in its base form.

Why do we use the standalone articles det and den if the nouns kaffet and rostningen already have definite endings?
