Swedish uses two common prepositional phrases to make explicit comparisons and highlight differences, such as when evaluating the flavor profiles of coffee roasts.
Unlike: Till skillnad från
To say "unlike" or "as opposed to," use till skillnad från. This phrase is built around the noun en skillnad (a difference).
| Unlike the fruity coffee, the dark roast is often bitter. | Till skillnad från det fruktiga kaffet är den mörka rostningen ofta bitter. |
| Unlike dark coffee, the fruity coffee is not bitter. | Till skillnad från mörkt kaffe är det fruktiga kaffet inte bittert. |
In Contrast To: I motsats till
For a slightly more formal comparison, use i motsats till, which translates to "in contrast to" or "contrary to."
| In contrast to the bitter aroma, the aftertaste is sweet. | I motsats till den bittra aromen är eftersmaken söt. |
| In contrast to the tea, our dark roast is very full-bodied. | I motsats till teet är vår mörka rostning mycket fyllig. |
Word Order Reminder: The V2 Rule
When you start a sentence with a phrase like till skillnad från or i motsats till, the entire phrase occupies the first position. Because Swedish follows the V2 (verb-second) rule, the main verb must come immediately after the contrastive phrase, pushing the subject to the third position.
Notice how the verbs rostar (roast) and förändras (changes) directly follow the comparison phrases in these examples:
| In contrast to the tea, we roast the beans to create the flavor profile. | I motsats till teet rostar vi bönorna för att skapa smakprofilen. |
| Unlike the aftertaste, the aroma changes during the roasting. | Till skillnad från eftersmaken förändras aromen under rostningen. |
