Questions & Answers about Färgskalan vore vacker om den inte var så mörk.
What verb form is vore, and could I use skulle vara instead?
Vore is the past subjunctive form of vara (to be), which translates to "would be" for hypothetical situations. You can absolutely use skulle vara instead, but vore is a very common, shorter alternative that Swedes use all the time in both speech and writing.
Why is the word order inte var instead of var inte?
The second half of the sentence is a subordinate clause because it starts with om (if). In Swedish subordinate clauses, sentence adverbs like inte must come before the first verb. This is known as the BIFF rule (Bisats, Inte Före Finita verbet).
Why do we use the past tense var for a hypothetical present situation?
Just like in English ("if it wasn't so dark"), Swedish uses the past tense to talk about unreal or hypothetical conditions in the present. You are imagining a situation that isn't currently true, so the tense shifts backwards into the past.
Could I use vore instead of var in the om-clause too?
