Questions & Answers about Fotot är suddigt och ger ett grått intryck.
Why is the word for grey spelled as grått with a double 't' here?
The base adjective is grå, which ends in a stressed vowel. When we make it neuter to match the ett-word intryck, we must add -tt instead of just a single -t. This rule applies to other adjectives ending in stressed vowels too, like ny becoming nytt.
Why does suddigt only get a single 't' while grått gets two?
The base word for blurry is suddig, which ends in a consonant. Regular adjectives ending in a consonant just take a single -t in the neuter form. The double -tt is specifically for adjectives that end in a stressed vowel, like grå.
Why is suddigt in the neuter form when it doesn't have ett right in front of it?
It is describing the subject of the sentence, fotot (the photo). Since foto is an ett word, any adjective describing it must be in the neuter form, even if they are separated by the verb är.
Does ger ett intryck work exactly like the English phrase 'gives an impression'?
Yes! The verb ger (gives) pairs with ett intryck (an impression) to describe how something appears or feels to the observer, making it a very direct and easy translation from English.
