Adjectives Ending in a Stressed Vowel
When describing an ett-word (a neuter noun), you usually add a -t to the end of the adjective. However, if the adjective ends in a stressed vowel, you must add a double -tt.
| En-word | Ett-word | English |
|---|---|---|
| ny | nytt | new |
| blå | blått | blue |
| grå | grått | grey |
| fri | fritt | free |
| rå | rått | raw |
| slö | slött | blunt, dull |
Just like standard adjectives, use this -tt form both when the adjective comes directly before a neuter noun and when it describes the noun later in the sentence.
| They are buying a new house today. | De köper ett nytt hus idag. |
| The light in the room is completely blue. | Ljuset i rummet är helt blått. |
| Sweden is a free society. | Sverige är ett fritt samhälle. |
| The concept is new, but the meat is a bit raw. | Konceptet är nytt, men köttet är lite rått. |
