Questions & Answers about Hon lär rymma med sin älskare ikväll.
Does lär mean 'is likely to' or 'is said to' in this sentence?
It can actually mean both, and the context usually decides! The verb lär is a modal verb used to express either probability ('is likely to') or hearsay ('is said to'). In this juicy piece of gossip, it could mean 'rumor has it she will run away' or 'it is highly probable she will run away'.
Why is the verb rymma in the infinitive form instead of the present tense?
Because lär functions as a modal verb here, just like kan, vill, or måste. Modal verbs are always followed by the infinitive form of the main verb, which is why we use rymma instead of the present tense rymmer.
Why does the sentence use sin instead of hennes for 'her'?
We use the reflexive possessive pronoun sin because 'her' refers back to the subject of the sentence, hon. If we used hennes here, it would mean she is running away with some other woman's lover!
Does the verb rymma always imply a romantic elopement?
Not at all! While it translates to 'run away' in this context, rymma generally means 'to escape' or 'to break out'. You would use the exact same verb for a prisoner escaping from jail or a dog slipping out of a fenced yard.
