Questions & Answers about Idag är även hunden tillåten i loungen.
Why is även placed right before hunden?
Focus particles like även (even/also) generally sit directly in front of the specific word or phrase they emphasize. Because the sentence emphasizes that even the dog is allowed, även goes right before hunden.
Why doesn't the Swedish sentence start with Idag även hunden är... like in English?
Because of the V2 (verb-second) rule. The time word Idag occupies the first position in the sentence, meaning the verb är must come immediately after it in the second position. The entire subject phrase även hunden gets pushed to the spot right after the verb.
Why do we use tillåten here instead of tillåtet?
Tillåten (allowed) acts as an adjective describing the subject, hunden. Because en hund is a singular en-word, the adjective takes the matching en-word form tillåten. If the subject were an ett-word, like barnet (the child), you would use tillåtet.
How does a borrowed English word like lounge get its definite form loungen?
English loanwords are usually assigned a gender in Swedish, and most become en-words. Since it is en lounge, it follows the regular Swedish rule for making an en-word definite: you just add an -n to the end to mean the lounge.
