Focus Particles
In Swedish, focus particles like bara (only), endast (only - formal), även (even), and också (also) highlight specific parts of a sentence. Their placement depends entirely on what they focus on.
Focusing on Nouns
When a particle applies directly to a specific noun or pronoun, it is placed directly before that noun.

Focusing on Actions
When the focus particle modifies a verb or the whole sentence, it acts as a sentence adverb. In a main clause, it is placed directly after the first (finite) verb—often squeezing between an auxiliary verb and the main verb.
| You can only enter by following the dress code. | Du kan endast komma in genom att följa klädkoden. |
| The guest may only be in the exclusive lounge. | Gästen får bara vara i den exklusiva loungen. |
Focusing on Phrases
To highlight a specific time, place, or condition, place the focus particle directly before the phrase it modifies.
| By paying, you get exclusive access only today. | Genom att betala får du exklusiv tillgång bara idag. |
| The expensive champagne is only for the boss. | Den dyra champagnen är bara för chefen. |
