Questions & Answers about Han tycker att tystnaden är underbar.
Why do we use tycker here instead of tror or tänker?
We use tycker for personal opinions based on your own experience. He is experiencing the silence and forming an opinion about it. You would use tror for something you believe but aren't certain about, and tänker for the literal act of thinking or planning.
Could we use vore (would be) in this sentence?
Yes! If you wanted to express a hypothetical situation like 'He thinks the silence would be wonderful', you could replace är (is) with vore: Han tycker att tystnaden vore underbar.
Why is it underbar and not underbart?
Adjectives need to match the gender of the noun they describe. Silence is an en-word (en tystnad), which becomes tystnaden in the definite form. Because it is an en-word, the adjective takes the base form underbar. If it were describing an ett-word, it would be underbart.
How is the noun tystnaden built from the adjective tyst (quiet)?
The suffix -nad is often added to adjectives or verbs to create an en-word noun. So tyst (quiet) becomes en tystnad (a silence), and adding the definite ending -en gives us tystnaden (the silence).
