Modern Swedish rarely uses the subjunctive mood, but one specific form has survived and is extremely common in everyday speech: vore (would be). It is the isolated past subjunctive form of the verb vara (to be).

Hypothetical Statements
You can use vore as the main verb of a sentence to express hypotheticals, wishes, or daydreams. It acts as a softer, imaginary version of the present tense är (is).
| It would be the dream. | Det vore drömmen. |
| The country house would be very relaxing. | Lantstället vore mycket avkopplande. |
When daydreaming about specific actions or setups, you will often see det vore paired with an infinitive phrase (starting with att) or a preposition (like med):
| It would be wonderful with a large terrace. | Det vore underbart med en stor terrass. |
| It would be the dream to live in the forest. | Det vore drömmen att bo i skogen. |
Polite Questions and Suggestions
Because vore frames things as hypothetical, it is perfect for softening questions, making gentle suggestions, or asking for permission politely. Just like with any other verb, form a question by moving vore to the front of the sentence.
| Wouldn't it be nice with a fireplace? | Vore det inte skönt med en kamin? |
