Questions & Answers about Det är det allra mest spännande spelet!
How does allra work here, and what exactly does it mean?
allra is an adverb used to intensify a superlative. Placed right before mest spännande, it translates to "the very" (the very most exciting). It emphasizes that this game is at the absolute top of the list compared to all others.
Why do we say mest spännande instead of putting an -ast ending on the adjective?
The word spännande (exciting) is a present participle, which means it is formed from a verb and ends in -ande. Adjectives ending in -ande or -ende cannot take the standard superlative suffix -ast. Instead, you must use mest (most) before them.
Why do we have det at the beginning of the phrase but also an -et at the end of spelet?
This is a reminder of the Swedish double definite rule. Whenever you have an adjective phrase (like allra mest spännande) modifying a specific, definite noun, you need the freestanding definite article (det) before it AND the definite suffix on the noun itself (spelet).
Usually, adjectives get an -a added to the end in a definite phrase. Why is spännande unchanged?
Because spännande ends in -ande, it is completely rigid. These types of adjectives never change their endings, no matter the gender, pluralization, or whether the phrase is definite or indefinite.
