Questions & Answers about Vi har möjligheten att resa utomlands.
How is the noun möjligheten built, and does its ending tell us its gender?
Möjligheten comes from the adjective möjlig (possible). By adding the suffix -het, we turn it into the noun möjlighet (possibility or opportunity). A very handy rule is that all nouns ending in -het are en-words. That is why it takes the definite ending -en to become möjligheten (the opportunity).
If we had multiple opportunities, how would we make möjlighet plural?
Nouns ending in -het have a very predictable plural form: they always belong to the group that adds -er. So "opportunities" is möjligheter, and "the opportunities" becomes möjligheterna.
Do we always need att before the verb resa here?
Yes! You might remember that modal verbs (like kan or vill) connect directly to the next verb without att. However, in this sentence, the verb resa is attaching to the noun möjligheten. When an infinitive verb attaches to a noun, you need the infinitive marker att (to), exactly like in English: "the opportunity to travel".
Utomlands means "abroad", but I also see the word utlandet. What is the difference?
