Questions & Answers about Hela klassen skrattade.
Why do we use hela instead of hel here?
Hela is the definite form of the adjective hel (whole). Because we are talking about a specific, definite noun (klassen, the class), the adjective must also be in its definite form, which adds an -a to the end.
Why isn't there a word for 'the' before hela klassen? Shouldn't it be den hela klassen?
Normally, definite adjectives need a separate 'the' word (den, det, or de) in front of them, like den stora klassen (the big class). However, the words hel (whole) and halv (half) are special exceptions in Swedish. You drop the den and just use hela directly in front of the definite noun.
How can I tell what the present tense of skrattade is?
The verb skrattade ends in -ade, which is the rule for Group 1 regular verbs in the past tense. To get the present tense, you drop the -de to make it skrattar (laughs or is laughing). The dictionary form (infinitive) is skratta.
Is klass an en-word or an ett-word?
It is an en-word (en klass). We can tell because its definite form is klassen (the class), which uses the -en ending.
