Questions & Answers about Det gör ont i båda fötterna och alla tårna.
Why does it say båda fötterna and alla tårna with the nouns in the definite ('the') form?
In Swedish, words like båda (both) and alla (all) are followed by the definite form of the noun. It is like saying 'both the feet' and 'all the toes'.
Could I use båda två instead of just båda here?
You could say båda två fötterna, but just båda is much more common right before a noun. båda två is usually used when the word stands alone, for example if someone asks which foot hurts and you just answer 'Both of them' (båda två).
Why do we use the preposition i (in) in this sentence?
To say that a specific body part hurts, Swedish uses the expression det gör ont i (literally 'it makes pain in') followed by the body part.
What are the singular forms of fötterna and tårna?
'A foot' is en fot, which gets an irregular plural: fötter (feet) and fötterna (the feet). 'A toe' is en tå, which becomes tår (toes) and tårna (the toes).
