Questions & Answers about Vi brukar bygga det själva eftersom det är roligt.
Why is it själva here instead of själv?
Själva is the plural form. Because the subject of the sentence is vi (we), which is plural, the emphatic pronoun must also be plural. If the subject were singular, like jag (I), you would use själv.
Why use the verb brukar instead of an adverb for "usually"?
While you can use an adverb like vanligtvis for "usually", Swedish most commonly uses the helper verb brukar followed by an infinitive verb (like bygga) to express that someone is in the habit of doing something.
Where exactly does själva go in a sentence like this?
It typically goes right after the object of the verb. In this sentence, the verb and its direct object are bygga det (build it), so själva follows immediately to emphasize that we do the building ourselves.
Why does roligt end with a -t?
The adjective takes the neuter -t ending because it describes the pronoun det (it). Here, det refers to the entire abstract action of building, and in Swedish, abstract concepts and actions always take neuter adjectives.
