Questions & Answers about Vi skickade en inbjudan den elfte november.
Why is there no word for "on" or "of" in den elfte november?
In English, you say "on the eleventh of November". In Swedish, you don't use a preposition like "on" before a specific date, and you don't translate "of". You simply use den followed by the ordinal number (elfte) and the month (november).
How do we get the word elfte (eleventh) from the number eleven?
The regular number eleven is elva. To make it an ordinal number (eleventh), you add -te. Notice that the spelling changes slightly: the v in elva changes to an f, making it elfte.
Why isn't the month november capitalized in the Swedish sentence?
Unlike in English, Swedish does not capitalize the names of months or days of the week. They are always written in lowercase, like november, oktober, or måndag.
The word inbjudan ends in -an, which usually means "the". Why does it have en in front of it?
Inbjudan is an irregular noun! Even though it looks like it already has a definite ending, inbjudan is actually the base form. That is why we say en inbjudan for "an invitation". If you want to say "the invitation", you just drop the en and simply say inbjudan.
How do we know the verb skickade is in the past tense?
The base verb is skicka (to send). Because it is a regular verb, you make it past tense by adding -de to the end, giving you skickade (sent).
