Questions & Answers about När bokar du flyget till Sverige?
The translation says 'are you booking' which asks about the future. Why does Swedish use the present tense bokar here?
In Swedish, you can often use the present tense to talk about the future. Because the question word när (when) establishes a future time context, the present tense bokar works perfectly to mean 'will you book' or 'are you going to book'.
Does bokar mean both 'book' and 'are booking'?
Yes! Swedish doesn't have a direct equivalent to the English '-ing' form (the present continuous). Depending on the context, the standard present tense bokar can translate to 'book', 'are booking', or even 'will book'.
Why does 'the flight' translate to flyget as one word?
Swedish attaches the word 'the' to the end of the noun. The basic word is ett flyg (a flight). Because it is an ett-word, you add the suffix -et to the end to make it flyget (the flight).
Why does the verb bokar come before the subject du?
This is because of the Swedish V2 rule, which states that the verb is usually the second piece of information in a sentence. Since the question word när takes up the first position, the verb bokar must come exactly second, pushing the subject du to the third spot.
