Expressing the Future with the Present Tense
In Swedish, you don't always need a future tense helper verb. For scheduled events or firm plans, simply use a present tense verb with a future time expression.
Common future time words include:
- imorgon (tomorrow)
- ikväll (tonight)
- snart (soon)
| I am booking the hotel tonight. | Jag bokar hotellet ikväll. |
| The bus leaves soon. | Bussen går snart. |
| Can I book the hairdresser tomorrow? | Kan jag boka frisören imorgon? |
Specifying the Time
To say something happens "in" a certain amount of time, use the preposition om. For example, om en timme means "in an hour".
For "the day after tomorrow", use the phrase i övermorgon.
| The train departs in an hour. | Tåget avgår om en timme. |
| She is going to the dentist the day after tomorrow. | Hon går till tandläkaren i övermorgon. |
Time First, Verb Second (V2 Rule)
You can emphasize when something happens by starting the sentence with a time expression. When you do this, remember the V2 rule: the verb must be the second element, meaning the subject and verb swap places.
| The day after tomorrow we land at the airport. | I övermorgon landar vi på flygplatsen. |
Scheduling and Appointments
When setting up an appointment, use verbs like fungera (to work/function) and passa (to suit) to ask if a future time is convenient.
| Does it work well tomorrow? | Fungerar det bra imorgon? |
| Does the time suit on Friday? | Passar tiden på fredag? |
