Questions & Answers about Vad packade du i väskan?
Why is the verb packade and not just packa?
This sentence is in the past tense (preteritum). Packa (to pack) is a regular Group 1 verb. For verbs in this group, you simply add -de to the infinitive form to make the past tense, resulting in packade.
Why is there no word for "did" in the Swedish sentence?
Swedish doesn't use helper words like "do" or "did" to form questions. Instead, you just put the main verb right after the question word. "What did you pack?" translates directly to Vad packade du? (literally: "What packed you?").
Will Swedish speakers pronounce every letter in packade?
In formal situations or careful reading, yes. However, in everyday spoken Swedish, the -de ending on Group 1 past tense verbs is almost always silent. It will usually sound exactly like the infinitive form: Vad packa du?
Why does väska have an -n at the end?
En väska means "a bag". To say "the bag", Swedish attaches the definite article to the end of the word. Since väska is an en-word that already ends in a vowel, you just add an -n to get the definite form väskan.
