Questions & Answers about Nu är de varma och trötta.
Why do varma and trötta end in an -a?
They are describing the plural subject de (they). In Swedish, when an adjective describes a plural noun or pronoun, it takes an -a at the end. The base forms for a single person would be varm and trött.
Why is the word order Nu är de instead of Nu de är?
This is due to the Swedish V2 rule. The verb in a statement must be the second piece of information. Because the time word Nu (now) takes the first spot, the verb är (are) has to come immediately after it, pushing the subject de (they) to the third spot.
How should I pronounce the word de in this sentence?
Even though it is spelled de, in spoken Swedish it is almost always pronounced like dom. You will very rarely hear it pronounced as it is spelled.
Can I use the Swedish word heta (hot) instead of varma here?
It is much safer to use varma! When talking about feeling warm from exercise or the weather, varm is the correct word. Calling people heta usually means you find them highly attractive.
