Questions & Answers about Du är här.
Is du used when talking to one person or multiple people?
Du is the singular form of "you", meaning it is used when you are talking to exactly one person. If you want to tell a group of people that they are here, you need to use the plural pronoun ni instead, making the sentence Ni är här.
If I change the pronoun, does the verb är change too?
No, and this is a great feature of Swedish grammar! Unlike English, which changes the verb to match the subject (I am, you are, he is), Swedish verbs never change based on the pronoun. You will always use är for "to be" in the present tense: jag är, du är, vi är, and so on.
Does Swedish use the same word for "are" when talking about location as it does for descriptions?
Yes! Some languages have separate verbs for "to be" depending on whether you are describing a characteristic or a location, but Swedish just uses är for both. It works exactly like English in this regard.
Can I move här to the beginning of the sentence?
You can, but it changes the word order. Swedish uses a rule called "V2" where the verb must usually be the second block of information. If you start with Här, the verb är must come next, followed by the subject du. The sentence becomes Här är du, which means "Here you are."
