To state the price per unit, weight, or volume in Swedish, you don't need a preposition like "per" or "a."
The Definite Form for "Per" Unit
Instead of a preposition, simply state the price followed by the unit of measurement in its definite singular form.
For example, to say "per meter," use metern (literally "the meter"). To say "apiece" or "each," use stycket ("the piece").
| The timber costs ninety kronor per meter. | Virket kostar nittio kronor metern. |
| Red bricks cost twelve kronor a piece. | Röda tegelstenar kostar tolv kronor stycket. |
Weights and Volumes
This rule applies across all standard measurements. Just make the unit of weight or volume definite and place it immediately after the price:
- kilot = per kilo
- litern = per liter
| The gravel costs thirty kronor per kilo. | Gruset kostar trettio kronor kilot. |
| The paint costs one hundred kronor per liter. | Målarfärgen kostar hundra kronor litern. |
Packaged Quantities
This structure also works for items sold in packages, such as a roll (rullen) or a bundle (bunten).
| The cable costs twenty kronor per roll. | Kabeln kostar tjugo kronor rullen. |
| The newspapers cost twenty kronor per bundle. | Tidningarna kostar tjugo kronor bunten. |
VAT, Discounts, and Shipping
When finalizing a purchase, you'll encounter a few essential commercial terms. Just like the units above, you will often hear these in their definite forms when discussing a specific transaction:
- rabatten (the discount)
- momsen (the VAT)
- frakten (the shipping)
| Without the discount, the paint is too expensive. | Utan rabatten är målarfärgen för dyr. |
| The VAT is twenty-five percent. | Momsen är tjugofem procent. |
