Questions & Answers about Målarfärgen kostar hundra kronor litern.
Why is it just litern at the end instead of a phrase like "per liter"?
In Swedish, you usually express unit pricing simply by putting the unit of measurement in its definite singular form. So litern directly translates to "per liter" or "a liter" in English. You do not need to add a preposition like "per" or "för".
Why use målarfärgen instead of just färgen?
Färg can mean either "color" or "paint". To make it perfectly clear that you are talking about physical paint, Swedish uses the compound word målarfärg (literally "painting-color"). Since we are buying it by the liter, färgen would also be understood here, but målarfärgen is unmistakable.
The English translation says "one hundred", so why is there no word for "one" before hundra?
In Swedish, the numbers 100 and 1,000 are normally just stated as hundra and tusen. You generally only add ett (making it ett hundra) if you need to be extremely precise, such as on a formal financial document, or if you are specifically contrasting it with another amount like two hundred.
