Not Until: Först
When you want to express that something is delayed or won't happen until a later time, English uses the negative structure "not until". Swedish expresses this affirmatively using the adverb först (which literally means "first").
Because the phrasing is affirmative, do not use the negative word inte. Instead of saying something will not happen until a certain time, you are saying it will happen first at that later time.
| Call the maître d'. The regular guest isn't coming until eight. | Ring hovmästaren. Stamgästen kommer först klockan åtta. |
| If you want a table, we won't have an opening until November. | Vill du ha ett bord, har vi en lucka först i november. |
| Do not call the maître d' now. He won't answer until tomorrow. | Ring inte hovmästaren nu. Han svarar först imorgon. |
You can place först directly before a time phrase (like imorgon or på fredag) or an event (like efter en avbokning). Notice how the Swedish verbs remain affirmative, even though they translate to a negative in English.
| Plan ahead, because the waiting list doesn't open until Friday. | Ha framförhållning, eftersom väntelistan öppnar först på fredag. |
| The restaurant is sought-after, so we won't get a table until after a cancellation. | Restaurangen är eftertraktad, så vi får ett bord först efter en avbokning. |
| You must plan ahead, because we aren't releasing the tables until next month. | Du måste ha framförhållning, eftersom vi släpper borden först nästa månad. |
| We are fully booked, so you will end up on the waiting list and won't get a table until the weekend. | Vi är fullbokade, så du hamnar på väntelistan och får ett bord först i helgen. |
