Exclamations with "Så"
To form exclamations meaning "How [adjective]...!" or "So [adjective]...!", start with så.
Unlike questions, these use standard declarative word order: Så + adjective + subject + verb. The adjective still agrees with the noun's gender.
| How magnificent the night sky is! | Så storslagen natthimlen är! |
| How colorful the northern lights are tonight! | Så färgstarkt norrskenet är ikväll! |
| How unforgettable this night is! | Så oförglömlig den här natten är! |
Adverbs in exclamations
You can also use så with an adverb to describe how an action happens or to emphasize another adjective.
| How beautifully the moon lights up the night sky! | Så vackert månen lyser upp natthimlen! |
| How unforgettably magnificent this is! | Så oförglömligt storslaget det här är! |
Emphasizing with "själva"
To say "the actual [noun]" or "the [noun] itself," place själva directly before the definite noun.
| The actual spectacle lights up the cold night. | Själva skådespelet lyser upp den kalla natten. |
| The northern lights themselves sparkle over the vast lake. | Själva norrskenet gnistrar över den vidsträckta sjön. |
Exclaiming with "Vad"
You can substitute så with vad (what/how) to create the exact same type of exclamation. Word order and adjective agreement remain unchanged.
| How colorful the actual spectacle is! | Vad färgstarkt själva skådespelet är! |
