The Particle Changes Everything
A Swedish particle verb is a verb plus a stressed particle, and the pair means something the verb alone does not. You know ta; ta upp is to raise a topic and ta emot is to receive.
| particle verb | English | plain verb |
|---|---|---|
| ta upp | to bring up, raise | ta |
| ta emot | to receive | ta |
| ge ut | to publish | ge |
| ge bort | to give away | ge |
| lägga ner | to shut down | lägga |
| lägga till | to add | lägga |
| The boss raised the question at the meeting. | Chefen tog upp frågan på mötet. |
The stress falls on the PARTICLE, not the verb: ta UPP, ge UT. That is what tells a listener you mean the particle verb and not the verb plus a loose adverb.
Ending and Forgetting
Säga upp is to terminate — a contract, a lease, or an employee. You already know säga upp sig, which is what the employee does instead. Lägga ner shuts something down for good: a factory, a school, a project.
| They shut down the workshop recently. | De lade ner verkstaden nyligen. |
Glömma bort is stronger than plain glömma: the bort says the thing has gone from your mind entirely.
Starting and Belonging
Komma igång is to get going — the verb for the hardest part of any task. Hänga ihop means to be connected, of ideas as much as of objects, and höra till means to belong to.
| It is hard to get going on Mondays. | Det är svårt att komma igång på måndagar. |
