Questions & Answers about Chefen tog upp frågan på mötet.
Could I separate the verb and its particle here, like Chefen tog frågan upp på mötet?
No. In English, you can say "brought the question up," separating the verb and the particle. In Swedish, particle verbs like ta upp generally must stay together. The object (frågan) comes directly after the particle.
Does ta upp only mean to "raise" an issue, or can it be used physically?
It is used for both! You can use it figuratively to raise a topic or issue, just as in this sentence. You can also use it literally to pick something up with your hands, such as ta upp boken från golvet (pick up the book from the floor).
Why do we use the preposition på with mötet instead of i or vid?
In Swedish, på is the standard preposition for events, gatherings, and planned activities. Just as you would say you are på en fest (at a party) or på en konsert (at a concert), you say på mötet because it is an event you attend rather than a physical room you are inside.
Are there other common ways to say "raised the question" in a Swedish workplace?
Yes. While tog upp frågan is perfectly natural and very common, in modern Swedish business environments you will also frequently hear lyfte frågan (literally "lifted the question") or the slightly more formal väckte frågan ("woke the question").
