If I want to ask where the beach is, which 'where' word should I use?
You would use dónde, as in ¿Dónde está la playa?. Because this sentence tells us the location of the beach, we just need the basic word for 'where'. We would not use adónde (to where) or de dónde (from where) because there is no movement happening.
Why do we use está instead of es if the beach is permanently in the west?
We use está (from the verb estar) because we are talking about a physical location. A common beginner rule is that estar is for temporary states, but location is a major exception! Spanish almost always uses estar to say where something is located, even for permanent places like beaches, buildings, or cities.
Are compass directions like oeste always masculine?
Yes! All four cardinal directions are masculine in Spanish: el norte (north), el sur (south), el este (east), and el oeste (west). That is why we use the masculine article el here.
