In Spanish, the verb gustar actually means "to be pleasing to." So instead of saying "I like yellow bananas," the sentence is literally saying "The yellow bananas are pleasing to me." Because the bananas (los plátanos) are plural, the verb must also be in its plural form: gustan.

Why do we need the word los? The English translation doesn't say "the yellow bananas."

When you talk about your general likes or dislikes in Spanish, you must include the definite article (el, la, los, or las) before the noun. Even though we just say "bananas" in English, Spanish requires you to literally say "the bananas."

Why does amarillos come after plátanos, and why does it end in -os?

In Spanish, describing words (adjectives) usually come after the noun they describe. They also have to match the gender and number of that noun. Since plátanos is masculine and plural, the word for yellow must also be masculine and plural, changing from amarillo to amarillos.

I thought the word for banana was banana. What is a plátano?
