Imminent actions (estar por)

When you want to say that you are "about to" do something or that an event is on the verge of happening, use the phrase estar por followed by an infinitive.

Conjugate the verb estar to match the subject, and leave the main action verb in the infinitive.

The pilot is about to unfold the balloon.
El piloto está por desplegar el globo.
We are about to fly over the valley.
Estamos por sobrevolar el valle.

Describing preparations

This structure is useful for narrating step-by-step preparations or building anticipation, such as getting ready to launch a hot air balloon.

They are about to untie the mooring and release the hook.
Ellos están por desatar el amarre y soltar el gancho.
The wind is favorable, so the pilot is about to start the maneuver.
El viento es favorable, así que el piloto está por empezar la maniobra.
