However and nevertheless (ahora bien, no obstante)

Reviewing Film and Theater

When writing a formal review of a play or film, expressive vocabulary helps set a professional tone when critiquing storytelling and visual elements.

The film's cinematography is masterful.
La cinematografía de la película es magistral.
The film has a very captivating plot.
La película tiene una trama muy cautivadora.

Contrasting with ahora bien

To write a balanced review, contrast positive and negative points using ahora bien ("however" or "that being said"). In formal writing, these connectors are typically preceded by a semicolon (;) or a period, and followed by a comma (,).

The visual style is beautiful; however, the plot is boring.
The first part is masterful; however, the plot is more confusing than it seems.

Expressing "nevertheless" with no obstante

Another excellent connector for formal reviews is no obstante ("nevertheless" or "however"). It functions exactly like ahora bien to smoothly bridge two contrasting arguments, such as praising the cinematography but critiquing the set design (la escenografía) or the cast (el reparto).

The cinematography is excellent; nevertheless, the set design is less impressive than we believed.
The cast is good; nevertheless, the performance was worse than it seemed.
The theater did not have a good set design; nevertheless, the cast gave an incredible performance.
