Finishing Tasks with "Terminar de"
To say that you finish doing something, use terminar (to finish) followed by the preposition de and an infinitive verb. Both terminar and dejar are completely regular -ar verbs.
| I finally finish writing this report. | Finalmente termino de escribir este informe. |
| We finally finish reading this long chapter. | Finalmente terminamos de leer este capítulo largo. |
Quitting and Stopping with "Dejar de"
To say that someone is stopping an activity or quitting a habit, use the verb dejar followed by de and an infinitive verb.
| That man stops lying and tells me the truth. | Ese hombre deja de mentir y me dice la verdad. |
| Why don't you stop interrupting the meeting? | ¿Por qué no dejas de interrumpir la reunión? |
Dejar de is also used when machines or devices stop working.
| My new watch stops working sometimes. | Mi reloj nuevo deja de funcionar a veces. |
Using Reflexive Verbs
When you use a reflexive verb after terminar de or dejar de, the reflexive pronoun attaches to the end of the infinitive and must match the person doing the action.
| You never stop worrying about the future. | Nunca dejas de preocuparte por el futuro. |
| The customer never stops complaining about the service. | El cliente nunca deja de quejarse del servicio. |
