Expressing likes (me gusta)

Expressing Likes with "Gustar"

In Spanish, expressing what you like works a bit differently. Instead of saying "I like chocolate," you literally say "Chocolate is pleasing to me." Use the verb gustar with an indirect object pronoun to indicate who is pleased.

PronounEnglishGustar (Singular noun / Infinitive)
meto meme gusta
teto youte gusta
leto him / her / you (formal)le gusta
nosto usnos gusta
lesto them / you allles gusta

When talking about a singular noun, use gusta followed by the definite article (el or la) and the item.

I do not like chocolate.
No me gusta el chocolate.
Do you like ice cream because it is hot?
¿Te gusta el helado porque hace calor?

Liking Activities (Infinitive Verbs)

Use gusta when talking about actions you like to do, followed by one or more infinitive verbs.

I like to draw in the park because it is quiet.
Me gusta dibujar en el parque porque es tranquilo.
We like to eat bread with cheese for breakfast.
Nos gusta comer pan con queso para el desayuno.

Adding Clarity and Emphasis

Because le and les can refer to multiple people, you can add a + [pronoun or name] at the beginning of the sentence to clarify who likes the item or action.

You all like to visit the art museum.
A ustedes les gusta visitar el museo de arte.

You can also use this structure with (me), ti (you), or nosotros (us) to add emphasis or contrast.

We like to paint and draw.
A nosotros nos gusta pintar y dibujar.
They like cheese, but I do not.
A ellos les gusta el queso, pero a mí no.
