Direct wishes (¡que...!)

Direct Wishes with "¡Que...!"

In Spanish, you can wish someone well by simply starting a phrase with ¡Que... followed immediately by a verb in the present subjunctive.

Think of this as a shortcut. When you say ¡Que tengas un buen día! (Have a good day!), you are essentially leaving off the beginning of the sentence: [Espero] que tengas un buen día (I hope that you have a good day).

May you have a lot of health and love!
¡Que tengas mucha salud y amor!
Be careful, I hope it goes very well for you!
Ten cuidado, ¡que te vaya muy bien!
It is already night, rest well!
Ya es de noche, ¡que descanses bien!

Special Occasions and Blessings

This structure is heavily used for standard cultural greetings, congratulations, and blessings. Whether someone is sick, celebrating a birthday, or asking for protection, ¡que! + subjunctive is the most natural way to express your good wishes.

Happy birthday! May you have many more!
¡Feliz cumpleaños! ¡Que cumplas muchos más!
May God bless your family!
¡Que Dios bendiga a tu familia!

Wishing Enjoyment

When someone is heading to a party, eating a meal, or taking a trip, you can use verbs like divertirse (to have fun) or aprovechar / disfrutar (to make the most of / to enjoy) in the subjunctive to wish them a good time.

Have a lot of fun on vacation!
¡Que te diviertas mucho en las vacaciones!
Bon appétit, enjoy the food!
¡Buen provecho, que disfrutes la comida!
Enjoy the vacation with your family!
¡Que aproveches las vacaciones con tu familia!
