Anticipatory deadlines (para cuando)

Setting future deadlines with "para cuando"

To talk about a deadline or a target that will be met by a certain time, you can use the phrase para cuando (by the time / for when). When this deadline is in the future, it represents an anticipated event that hasn't happened yet. Because it is an uncompleted future action, the verb immediately following para cuando must be in the present subjunctive.

I will be ready by the time sunset arrives.
Estaré listo para cuando llegue el atardecer.
By the time you finish the manuscript, the printing press will be closed.
Para cuando termines el manuscrito, la imprenta estará cerrada.

Notice that the para cuando clause can appear either at the beginning or at the end of the sentence. The main clause often uses the future tense to describe what will be finished by that time.

The prototype will already be finished by the time sunset arrives.
El prototipo ya estará terminado para cuando llegue el atardecer.

Coordinating project timelines

This structure is incredibly useful for project management and coordinating schedules. It pairs perfectly with vocabulary like el lanzamiento (the launch), la maqueta (the mock-up), or el folleto (the brochure).

Honestly, the preparations will not be ready by the time the launch begins.
Sinceramente, los preparativos no estarán listos para cuando empiece el lanzamiento.
By the time we evaluate the mock-up, the prototype will be finished.
Para cuando evaluemos la maqueta, el prototipo estará terminado.

Past expectations and deadlines

You can also use para cuando to talk about deadlines that were set or expected in the past. If the main action is in a past tense (such as the preterite or the imperfect), the anticipated deadline is shifted back in time as well. In this case, the verb following para cuando takes the imperfect subjunctive.

I needed the corrections by the time the manuscript was ready.
Yo necesitaba las correcciones para cuando el manuscrito estuviera listo.
I wanted the brochure to be ready by the time they approved the mock-up.
Yo quería que el folleto estuviera listo para cuando aprobaran la maqueta.
They organized the preparations for when I presented the manuscript.
Ellos organizaron los preparativos para cuando yo presentara el manuscrito.
