Questions & Answers about Если в погребе высокая влажность, спустя неделю появится плесень.
Why does спустя come before неделю here, and could we write неделю спустя instead?
Yes, you can use either order! Спустя is unique because it evolved from a gerund, giving it more flexibility than typical prepositions. Both спустя неделю and неделю спустя mean "a week later" and require the accusative case, which is why we see the ending on неделю.
How does спустя неделю differ from через неделю?
While both relate to time passing, через typically measures time forward from the present moment to mean "in a week". Спустя measures time from a specific reference point in a sequence to mean "a week later", and it emphasizes the actual passage of that time.
Why is there no verb like есть or будет in the first clause, Если в погребе высокая влажность?
Russian often drops the verb to be in the present tense when describing a general state or condition. Even though the second half of the sentence happens in the future with появится, the first half describes an ongoing factual condition. Treating it as a present-tense state with a dropped verb is perfectly natural here.
Why is the perfective verb появится used here instead of an imperfective counterpart?
The perfective появится focuses on the concrete result of the mold springing into existence. An imperfective verb would focus on the ongoing process of the mold forming, but this sentence acts as a warning about a completed, specific result: the mold will definitely show up.
