Questions & Answers about Студенту не хватает вдохновения и мотивации.
Why is the word for student in the Dative case (студенту) rather than the Nominative?
Because the verb хватать is used impersonally here. In Russian, the person experiencing the lack is not the grammatical subject. Instead, they are the receiver or experiencer of the situation, which requires the Dative case. You can think of it literally as 'To the student, there is not enough...'
Why are the words for inspiration and motivation in the Genitive case (вдохновения and мотивации)?
The verbs хватать (imperfective) and хватить (perfective) always require the thing that is sufficient or lacking to be in the Genitive case. This rule applies regardless of whether the statement is positive or negative.
Could we use the perfective form не хватит instead of не хватает?
Yes, but it would change the meaning to the future tense. The imperfective не хватает describes an ongoing, present state: the student currently lacks motivation. The perfective не хватит means 'will not suffice' or 'will not be enough' for a specific upcoming task.
Why does мотивация take an -и ending (мотивации) instead of the usual feminine Genitive -ы?
Feminine nouns ending in -ия (like мотивация or лекция) follow a special declension pattern. They always end in -ии in the Genitive, Dative, and Prepositional singular forms.
