Questions & Answers about Не то чтобы её роман нас разочаровал, а просто сюжет оказался банальным.
The lesson focuses on the structure не то чтобы [A], а [B]. Why is просто added to the second half here?
In this mitigating structure, просто (simply) is frequently added after а to further soften the statement. It shifts the tone from a direct contradiction to a gentle explanation, somewhat like saying 'It is not exactly A, it is just B'.
Why does the adjective банальным end in -ым?
It is in the instrumental case because of the verb оказался (turned out to be). Linking verbs like оказаться, являться (to be), and стать (to become) require the instrumental case for the adjective describing the subject.
Why are both verbs in this sentence (разочаровал and оказался) perfective?
The speaker is sharing their final impression after having already finished the novel. The perfective aspect emphasizes the completed, factual result: the book did not successfully disappoint them, and the plot definitively turned out to be cliché.
Does the phrase не то чтобы require a specific verb tense or mood?
No, it can be used with any tense. Here it uses the past tense because the reading is finished, but you could easily use present or future. You will also often see it paired with subjunctive verbs ending in -л бы for hypothetical scenarios, but in this sentence, the speaker is stating a direct past fact.
