Learn Russian: При пожаре вам надо срочно выйти из здания. - In case of fire, you must urgently leave the building.

While при can indicate physical location near something, this lesson focuses on its conditional meaning. When followed by the Prepositional case (пожаре), it establishes a prerequisite, condition, or surrounding circumstance, translating to 'in the event of' or 'during'.

Why is the pronoun вам in the Dative case instead of the Nominative вы?

Words that express obligation, necessity, or state, such as надо (must or need to), always form impersonal sentences in Russian. This means they require the logical subject to be in the Dative case, essentially meaning 'to you it is necessary'.

Could I use уйти instead of выйти to mean 'leave' in this sentence?

You could, but выйти is much more precise for this situation. The prefix вы- specifically emphasizes the action of physically moving out of an enclosed interior space. уйти simply means to depart or go away in a more general sense, without focusing on the physical exit.

Why use the preposition из before здания?
