Questions & Answers about Вот бы сидеть под пальмой и пить холодный коктейль.
Why does this sentence use the infinitives сидеть and пить instead of the past tense after вот бы?
While вот бы with the past tense is used to wish for a specific subject to do something (like Вот бы он пришёл - "If only he would come"), вот бы with an infinitive is used for impersonal or general wishes. It translates closer to "It would be so nice to...". Since there is no specific grammatical subject like "I" or "he" stated in the Russian sentence, the infinitive is the natural choice for this dreamy desire.
Both infinitives here, сидеть and пить, are imperfective. Could we use perfective verbs instead?
Using imperfective verbs focuses on the continuous, enjoyable process of the actions—spending time sitting and drinking. Perfective verbs would shift the focus to a single completed action or a result, which completely breaks the vibe of a continuous, relaxing daydream.
Why is пальмой in the instrumental case?
The preposition под (under) takes the instrumental case when it describes a static location, answering the question "where?" (где?). If you were describing motion to a destination under something, answering "to where?" (куда?), под would take the accusative case instead. Since you are already sitting in that location, instrumental is required.
