Questions & Answers about Ветер выл всё сильнее и сильнее, так как начиналась гроза.
We are learning the metaphorical Instrumental of comparison. How could I apply that to the wind in this sentence?
A classic Russian poetic expression is ветер выл волком (the wind howled like a wolf). By putting волк (wolf) into the Instrumental case (волком), you create a metaphor that replaces the need for a comparison word like как. You could easily insert it here: Ветер выл волком всё сильнее...
Why is всё used before сильнее и сильнее? Doesn't всё usually mean everything?
By itself, всё often means everything or all. But when you put всё in front of a comparative word like сильнее, it shows that an action or state is continuously increasing. Всё сильнее и сильнее translates to stronger and stronger, and you can also use just всё сильнее to mean ever stronger.
Why is the word order reversed at the end (начиналась гроза instead of гроза начиналась)?
In Russian, the most important new information usually goes at the end of the sentence. When describing weather or setting a scene, putting the verb first (начиналась) and the subject last (гроза) is the most natural way to announce the arrival of a new event.
Could I use потому что instead of так как in this sentence?
Yes, you could use потому что here without changing the core meaning. However, так как (since / as) feels slightly more literary. Additionally, так как is more flexible with clause placement: you can easily start a sentence with Так как начиналась гроза..., whereas starting a sentence with Потому что is generally avoided.
