Questions & Answers about По данным переписи, рождаемость в нашей стране возрастает.
Why is данным in the dative case here?
The preposition по takes the dative case when it means according to. The phrase по данным is a standard way to say according to the data or according to the figures. Notice that данные (data) acts grammatically like a plural adjective turned into a noun.
What case is переписи and why?
It is in the genitive case because it modifies данным to mean the data of the census. Перепись (census) is a feminine noun ending in a soft sign, which means it belongs to the third declension (like вещь or тетрадь), so its genitive ending is -и.
Since this lesson is about agreement with quantifiers, does a statistical word like перепись affect the verb ending?
No, it doesn't. The grammatical subject is рождаемость (birth rate), which is a standard feminine singular noun, so the verb возрастает strictly takes the singular form. You only need to apply the tricky neuter singular or plural rules when the subject itself is a quantifier phrase, like большинство людей (the majority of people) or ряд стран (a number of countries).
What does the prefix воз- add to the verb in возрастает?
The prefix воз- (or вос-) often adds a sense of upward movement, intensity, or abstract scale. While the base verb расти is the everyday word for to grow, возрастать is a slightly more formal verb specifically meaning to increase or to rise, making it the perfect choice for statistics, rates, and figures.
