Agreement with quantifiers (большинство, ряд)

When discussing demographics, we often talk about population statistics, censuses (перепись), and broad trends—such as the birth rate (рождаемость) rising or the death rate (смертность) falling.

To talk about these statistics, you need collective quantifiers like большинство (majority), меньшинство (minority), and ряд (a number of). These are followed by a noun in the genitive plural. But what happens to the verb? Does it match the quantifier, or the plural noun?

Russian allows two patterns for subject-verb agreement here, depending on what you want to emphasize.

Plural Agreement (Active Individuals)

When your subject is a group of animate beings (like people or animals) actively doing something as individuals, the verb usually takes the plural form.

Even though words like большинство and ряд are grammatically singular, the plural verb makes sense because we are focusing on the independent actions of the people within that group.

Singular Agreement (Collective Units)

If you want to emphasize the group as a single, unified statistical block, or if the noun is inanimate (objects, abstract concepts), the verb remains in the singular.

When using singular agreement, the verb's gender must match the grammatical gender of the quantifier itself:

  • большинство and меньшинство are neuter, so they take neuter singular verbs.
  • ряд is masculine, so it takes a masculine singular verb.
After the census it was clear that the majority of houses were located in the center.
После переписи было ясно, что большинство домов находилось в центре.

You will sometimes see singular agreement used with animate nouns, too. This happens when the speaker views the people not as individuals, but strictly as a statistical chunk of the population.

Agreement with Numbers

The exact same logic applies to numbers (five, fifty, one hundred, etc.) acting as the subject.

If you are emphasizing a group of individuals independently performing an action, use the plural verb. If you are emphasizing a raw statistical quantity or an inanimate block, use the neuter singular verb.
